Biography

Jarod Valencia-Cheng, They/Them/Elle, is an MFA candidate in Creative Writing (Fiction), as well as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at the University of Kansas in Fall 2023.



They focus primarily in marginalized narratives, empathetic and inclusive creative writing pedagogy, and incorporating mixed media into writing as an artistic practice. Other areas of study that they are interested in are social justice in higher education, disability and accessibility, queer studies, photography/visual media, and others.



Their pursuits are fueled by the hope of a multifaceted career in writing stories based in the intersectionality of marginalized identities, as well as educating the next young writers through evolving practices in creative writing pedagogy in postsecondary education.

B.A. in English and Creative Writing, The University of Iowa (UI)

Teaching

Valencia-Cheng is currently teaching ENGL:101 to first-year undergraduates at KU.
